Soon to be celebrated is the festival of Purim- as Wikipedia defines it: “a Jewish holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, an Achaemenid Persian Empire official who was planning to kill all the Jews, as recounted in the Book of Esther.

Poppy seed, Purim and Hamantachen? Feeling lost? Let me explain.

For whatever reason, Poppy Seeds are the traditional filling of the Seasonal cookies called “Hamantachen” or “Oznei Haman”.

So what are the health benefits of Poppy Seeds?

Poppy seeds are rich in healthy plant compounds and nutrients like manganese.

These seeds and their oil may boost fertility and aid digestion, though further research is needed on many of their supposed benefits.

Unwashed poppy seeds can also contain become contaminated with varying amounts of opium compounds known for their pain-relieving, calming, and sleep-inducing properties.

Yet, you should never eat unwashed poppy seeds due to the health risks involved.
